    Sterling Silver Pieces

You can avoid tarnish by wearing your sterling silver jewelry often. The oils in your skin will “clean” the silver and keep it looking shiny. Direct sunlight also causes silver to tarnish, so be sure to take off your silver jewelry before you go swimming and sunbathing. Lotions, cosmetics, hair spray and hair products, and perfumes will accelerate tarnishing. Storage: Exposure to air tarnishes sterling silver, so storing silver in airtight plastic bags will minimize how often you need to polish it. Avoid storing multiple jewelry pieces in the same bag: silver is a soft metal, so the individual pieces can scratch each other.

    Gold Filled Pieces

14K Gold Filled jewelry is a long lasting, economical way to enjoy the luster of gold without the big price tag and is usually considered a lifetime piece of jewelry. It looks very much like 14K Gold jewelry but is a lot less expensive and is also durable in the sense that it will not flake, peel, or wear off with reasonable care. It should last as long as solid 14K Gold jewelry. Additionally, gold-filled jewelry has about 100 times more gold than gold-plated jewelry.14K Gold Filled jewelry is made up of 14K Gold tubing, which is then filled with a base metal such as brass. The layer of gold bonds strongly to the brass so the gold surface so it will not wear off.  The 14K Gold tubing makes up 5 percent (1/20) of the total metal weight.

By Federal Law, 14K Gold Filled has far more gold than the few microns coating of gold in 14K Gold Plating – a hundred or more times the amount of gold, actually. Gold-filled items are 50 to 100,000 times thicker than regular gold plating, and 17 to 25,000 times thicker than heavy gold electroplate.

What is Gold Filled vs. Gold Plated?

Gold filled is an actual layer of gold-pressure bonded to another metal.  Gold filled is not to be confused with gold plating as filled literally has 100% more gold than gold plating.  Gold filled is much more valuable, and tarnish resistant.  It does not flake off, rub off or turn colors.  As a matter of fact, anyone who can wear gold can wear gold filled without worries of any allergic reaction to the jewelry.  Gold filled items are regulated by the government and in the jewelry industry, the quantity of gold must be at least 1/20 by weight of the total product.

How do I care for Gold Filled Jewelry?

Caring for Gold Filled items is as easy as caring for any gold jewelry. Simply keep away from chemicals, clean regularly with mildly sudsy water, rinse well and pat dry with a non-scratching cloth. Polish gently with a jewelry polishing cloth
